Gloomy Rainy Day Post

It is an icky, icky day outside, so we went to the movies to see "The Kings Speech".  It was a great film and so made me want to look up all the characters and see their real life selves!

We are NOT working on the barn today, in fact we have decided to take a few days off and rest.  Of course the fact that the weather is really dismal might have something to do with it!   You can check our progress over on Farmsteadstudio.

 I got these perfectly cool Crocodile clips in the mail today, and I can't wait to try them.  Sandra, over on Sandra's Loom Blog, has a great post on using these as a reverse temple,  so of course I have to try them out.  I searched here local and came up with nothing so I Googled them and found them on Amazon for a couple of dollars each.   I will post pics when I get the hang of it.

Toni now has the run of the upstairs when I am not at home. That is to encourage him to use those back legs.   In the evening I bring him down with us.  For the picture, he climbed into my lap all by himself, not by coming in front of me and climbing up, but he first climbed into the leather chair behind me and then onto the shelf beside me and then onto my lap.  He is still quite clumsy and does better on carpet than on the bare floor.  He is improving everyday, but I am not sure if he will ever be able to go back outside again.



I have a new order that came in today.  She wants a "Kings Flower" in copper!  I can't wait to try out those Crocodile Clips!

What a difference one day makes!

Yesterday we had snow. It came down hard and fast and the flakes were about the size of a quarter! Here is what our front yard looked like late yesterday afternoon.

Here is what the yard looked like 24 hours later.

There is only one small patch of snow left ( can you see it? ) but we will be getting more in the next few days. Some tonight and again tomorrow night and even more early next week! Yay!

I am in the process of putting on the very first warp on the Gilmore loom. It is going to be a table runner. This is a commission. Next I will get back to making rugs!

Projects

I've got projects on 3 looms. Can't show you the warp on my wolf pup since it's the mug rug for the Christmas party that is next week!! Maggie could show her warp because her mug rugs all are different. Well, if I showed my warp, you'd know exactly what I was doing so it'll have to wait just a bit longer!

 Carl's rug looks so awesome! I love how his painted warp turned out. I did a couple of warps as well but mine are both for scarves. This one I"m weaving with royal blue. I also have some turquoise bamboo so the next scarf will be woven with the turquoise. I think it'll be fun to see how the colors are different and the effects on the scarf that the weft color creates!

The rectangles are off the loom for the guild project. I've got the yarn ready for Cathy and Niki to do theirs. Once those are done I guess we'll have the big reveal. I like how mine turned out altho they may be a bit more weft faced than we were supposed to have them. I wanted to showcase the colors and as a result they are a bit heavier than they could be, I guess.  Haven't ironed them yet but they are all serged and ready for their new homes!

 So I have an order for 7 placemats. She wanted a chocolate color warp and then neutrals in the weft. I just put a long warp on my Nilus and hope to get to weaving today between appointments. Once the 7 are done, I can play a bit with other colors for the weft. I've got alot of carpet warp but also other yarns that are a bit heavier and would be great weft for placemats. I do need to build up my supply of placemats since I don't have many now and I don't want to be caught shorthanded!

This will be the last warp on the Nilus before I get back into production. I've got the other Nilus tho, to do rugs on so hope to get a warp on there soon and  start building up a supply of rugs as well!

First Tuesday

Carl has been so busy since we had our warp dyeing day back at the end of October.  This is his rug he made from the dyed warp.  (I have my scarf in the raddle....guess that doesn't count!)

We have another Dye Day coming up on January 15th.  This should inspire the weavers!!!!

Carol and Pat are still working on the bags of woolen garments that were donated.  Right now they are taking them apart....later they will be cut into strips to use in rugs.




Yes, that's Ann's back!

Ann had some strips that came loose.  She sat down at the sewing machine and joined the strips using a smaller stitch set.   You can see her rug in the background on the loom. 



Blue jean rugs are always a big hit upstairs in the shop.

Lanny finished 60" on his scarf warp.  It looks great!

Allan is just about finished all the threading and he'll be ready to start weaving next week.  I can't wait to see what he uses for the weft on these rugs.

We left the Center early and went over to Pine Ridge Studio to have lunch with Linda.  She had "fresh from the oven" cookies waiting for us, along with a tour of the new space.  She and her family have worked very hard getting everything refinished and moved in!  It looks GREAT!  Watch her blog for more pictures.

Next Tuesday we'll have our Christmas Party (rescheduled because of the snow.)  We'll get to see all the mug rugs & mugs, as well as the challenge scarves.  I can hardly wait!!!

Inkle-ing at the Lodge

New Year’s supper of grilled salmon over arugula with pomegranate vinaigrette, caviar pie with rye crepes. XC skiing along the arroyo, during a bitter cold snap here in the southern Rockies of New Mexico. We received another 6-8 inch blanket of new snow just before the temperatures dropped into the single digits (low of 2 degrees). Hopefully the snowy insulation will protect our treasured rosemary bush in the front herb garden. A few of the elder goats are shivering, despite our attempts to keep their little plastic shed warmer with a space heater. It’s tempting to let them all inside to warm up for awhile. Picture 10 goats lounging by the kiva fire, briefly rising for a disappointing taste of the the artificial Christmas tree! 

The snow was falling at Santa Fe Ski basin on Wednesday while our niece advanced quickly through the beginner ski school. David and I hiked the snow-packed Windsor Trail in the morning, then returned to the lodge to read (new Kindle for David from Santa) and yes, weave. I can’t be the first to weave in a ski lodge, but I did have a small audience of curious folks. This is only my second inkle project, but I’m weaving faster and the selvedges are much improved. I love this Schacht; it feels more like a sturdy wooden appendage than a loom. Now I just need to find an inexpensive bag for transport when it’s snowing, raining, blowing. I’m thinking maybe a tent bag from a camping store.

Welcome to 2011

I'm coming to you on my tin can-string computer this first morning of the New Year!  Long story short....my laptop died on Wednesday.  My brand new super-duper laptop met a fatal accident coming out of Atlanta, so the replacement will be here on Monday.  The good news is that all my files (MY WEAVING PICTURES) will be transferred to the new computer.  The bad news is that there will be no pictures today.

  So....my wish for all of you:
