Just Getting It Done

First of all:  thank you to Cindy for taking pictures so I could concentrate on threading that loom today.  Yes....that's me.  Karin is right beside me on the Cambridge weaving her first rug.  She finished that one and started on another one after lunch.
I am on the last repeat of the pattern, and I'll get to finish up next week!  Can we all say, "Amen!"

So, here are some highlights of our day:

LaDonna was able to join us today, and she was weaving on her Rigid Heddle Loom that stays at the Center.  Our visitor, Carol, was full of questions about weaving.  She is the new owner of a 60" Cranbrook.
There was a lot of conversation today about weaving on rigid heddle looms.  Some of our Tuesday Weavers are trying to decide if they would like to try one.

She also got a chance to talk with Molly about her new warp.  Molly has really dove in the weaving pool!!!!!

Marie got some weaving done on the placemat warp, but, she also took time to help Linda with a weaving question.

Tina is helping out by winding warps of bamboo for scarves.  These will be dyed at the next Dye Day.

At Show and Tell Time, Cindy brought her Rep Weave towels that she finished up.  They are beautiful!

Christy brought the bamboo scarves that she finished.  These will go upstairs to the Shop.

Last....but not least....the results of my threading!!!!  Just a few more to go, and we'll be ready to sley that reed.  YEAH!!!!

Stay tuned for next week!

Happy Weaving!

Back At It!

It's been a rainy, dreary half of the weekend and it's continuing to be a bit dreary most of today so it's a perfect time to be inside getting back to the work of production. Spring is just around the corner, some daffodils are blooming in our yard and the lenten roses are really happily blooming but the rest, not quite yet!
I've had fun weaving rugs, but it's time to get back to the production I need to get done for the shows later this year! First up, chocolate. I had a box with the yarns sitting by the warping board, patiently waiting for several months. The accent yarn I'd gotten from the knit shop in Clinton when I went there to pick up those knitting needles months ago. Now I could finally get it on the loom.

The color in the picture doesn't show now nice the brown is or how glittery that accent yarn is but the pieces will be so pretty once they're done! They're tempting me!!
I had an order for a navy dress, dark navy. Again, the picture is blander than it really is, but it is just a simple dark navy. Normally when I wind warps, I never wind just for one piece but this lady is tiny and I didn't want to have to weave different widths so just wound enough for this dress. That'll make it really one of a kind for her.
The chocolate pieces have been washed and are dry, waiting for me to cut and serge the last parts of each of them. Then I can change the thread to navy and get this one going. I should have her dress done by the weekend and mail it to her. She'll be excited about that. There's another dress in the order but I have to order yarn for it so this will be a 2 part shipment to her. It extends the fun, she says!
So that warp is done, ready to finish. What's next? More navy! This will go on today. It's a truer color than the other pictures, maybe because sunlight was still coming in the window by my warping board. Also, it's got navy chenille in the warp which will give it more shine. The dress didn't have any chenille in it.
It's raining again now. I'm glad I'm not weaving black right now. This navy has a bit of cheerfulness that will help cheer up the studio today.
The rest of the week promises to be busy, winding warps, planning projects and getting a yarn order in for the next few months' weaving. Friday we're planning to have a dye day at the center. I have to wind and wash my warps for that!! There's also a quilt show in Pigeon
Forge that I just have to go to!! You know how it is, the quilts will be a nice inspiration. I love to see what's shown at these shows and sometimes you get an idea for a color combination or a quilt to make......and then there's the vendors! I think half a day spent wandering the show will be time well spent!!
Otherwise, it's the studio for me!
Until next week, keep weaving!
Remember, spring's almost here!

Upgrade!

The Spinning wheel I brought home last Friday has had a few upgrades.  I had found that it was missing a secondary support for one of the wheel uprights.   Since I don't have woodworking skills, I went to the local hardware store and looked around until I found something that I thought might work.  I found a turnbuckle that was just about the perfect width.  I brought it home and marked it for length, then took it back the next day to see if there was someone who could cut it for me.  (There was!)  I brought it home, took the wheel off and turned the base on it's nose, to let gravity give me a hand, and I screwed it in place, I won't apply the second screw until I am sure it is in the right place.

What this little support does is realign the direction of the wheel to match up with the pulley on the flyer assembly.  Otherwise, it is lined up about 2 inches off to the side, and throws the drive band at the slightest turn of the wheel.

Next, I noticed that the front leg is a couple of inches too short.  I looked at the leg and realized that the toe of the "foot" that is present on the other legs was missing.  Who knows if it was sawn off or just worn off.  Anyway, I went to my tool box and found a foot protector to give it a little boost, plus protect the foot from further damage.  Ideally I would like to find a leg to replace this one,  (I have my sources!)  But for now this will do.

The main drivewheel supports did not have anything but wood for the axle to sit on, so I cut a couple of pieces of leather to fill that need,  I oiled them really good, and they seem to be doing the job.

The flyer repair is going to be a different story however.  I have smoothed the mandrel, that the bobbin rides upon, until there is no corrosion, and still, the bobbin will not turn as easily as it should.  There is also a small crack in the flyer that will have to be addressed before I can do any spinning on this wheel. I already have a bobbin in for repairs with my Canadian wheel guy, (for the other wheel), so once that is finished, I will be sending this flyer up to him to work his magic.

Now to the weaving studio, that's right, the weaving studio.  A couple of weeks/months ago, I posted about changing the sett of my baby blankets from 12 epi, to 12/11/11 epi.  It was one of the first things I did when I got back from my overseas trip.  I still had a really hard time getting into the studio to do anything that resembled "work".  Plus, let's face it, I have been doing the same blankets for ages!  I still have a lot of warp on the loom, (cause that is what I do), so I began to look thru my books to see if there was another pattern that I wanted to use.  I love overshot, but weaving with 2 shuttles is time consuming, and fiddley, at best.  I looked at the many one shuttle weaves, and I was not inspired.  I looked at some other overshot patterns, and was equally uninspired, plus there was the 2 shuttle thing as well.

Same old blanket!

I noticed that in one of the books I was using they used small parts of the overshot design to decorate a towel, and the lightbulb went on!  I was already on my way out the door to go to the center on Tuesday, So I grabbed my colored pencils and paper, and I went to a local coffee shop, for breakfast.  I drew lots of squares on the page, and I began to color.  I was there for 30 minutes or so, but I ended up with a page full of colorful blankets that I could weave.

I could barely wait to get home, Dear One was out of town, so I had the place and my time to myself.  I had an order for 2 blankets already started, and the first blanket was almost done.  I emailed the customer, and asked her if I could play with the second blanket.  She responded "absolutely, let the creative juices flow!"

I lit into that first blanket and finished it in record time.  As I advanced the warp for the second blanket I took a deep breath, and I started.  I had worked out the design on paper, and now that I knew how long the blanket should be, I divided up my design by inches.  I wanted it to look planned, but totally different than anything I had done before.

This is where I started.  I did small bands of color in plain weave, then I did 1 1/2 repeats of the threaded pattern, "Cat Tracks and Snail Trails" in a natural background.  Then I continued on in plain weave, mirroring the small bands of color.  (You can see my warp spacing in the plain weave sections, but I think it adds to the design.)  I continued on to the other end, where I did 5 repeats of the Snail Trail in the natural background, repeating the same bands of color on that end as well.

The fabric was much looser than what I had always had straight off the loom, but I had expected that.  With the new warp spacing and the switch to plain weave for most of the blanket, was going to give me the lighter weight blanket I was hoping for.

I washed this blanket first, cause I couldn't stand the suspense!  In fact I forgot totally to measure it before I washed it!  It came out of the washer in wonderful condition!  I spread it out over the back of the couch to dry.  The shrinkage was exactly what I had hoped for!
Whew, I won't have to do another one right away to replace it for this order.  I think the customer is really going to like it!  I took it over to show my daughter and she loved it, commenting on how gender neutral it was.  Yay!  That is exactly what the customer asked for!

So there you have it!  I have a template for a whole new set of blankets.  I can change the colors to suit a client, or to just play with to boost my inventory of baby gifts!

I do hope that your week has been as good as mine has been.  With the upgrade in wheels and weaving projects, there is a new energy about the place!

Until next time, Happy Spinning and Weaving, Tina

13 March 1993

We had fair warning....in fact, the weather folks had talked about this storm for about a week.  If all the elements came together just right, we were in for a big one!
That Friday night, the 12th of March, I went to pull my Mom van into the garage....just in case.  It had been a warm March day, and I really thought the storm would go around us.  It was almost dark when I went out to move the van, and it had already started to snow....BIG flaky blobs of snow!!!

Now...this was a time before cell phones, and people were trapped in their homes with no phone or electricity.  We had folks in the Smoky Mountains on Spring Break that were trapped in cabins and chalets.  They were air lifting bags of food to some of those, and doing search missions for some of the hikers.
My baby sister was looking forward to her birthday on the 13th...she and her husband had big plans for the evening.  Of course, that all changed.

She lost power...but still had phone service.  At my house, we didn't lose any services.   My kids were in middle school, and they had their friends over to sled in our back yard.  We had a great hill for sledding!  I kept a laundry basket by the door, and had them strip off gloves, mittens, hats and coats to take to the dryer.  I must have made gallons of hot chocolate and millions of grilled cheese sandwiches!!!!!  (Or, at least it seemed like it!)  For a week, it was like hosting summer camp for young adolescents!

Around this area, thoughts turned back to the March Blizzard as the newest storm approached this area.  We got lucky this time, and just got a flurry or two.  But it sure brought back lots of memories!
The warm temps this week tricked some of the trees into starting to bloom.  My ornamental magnolia started, and I am holding my breath to see if the blooms got nipped by the temps and snow flurries.  It's supposed to get down to 32 tonight, so I should know more tomorrow.  It is truly amazing when it is in full bloom.
We are expecting warm temps for the rest of the week and the weekend will be mild.  We have lots of rowers here for Spring Break right now, and they are out on the river early in the mornings.  I'm hoping this spring weather will hold for them.
My weaving will continue when I get all my tax information on the spreadsheets....I just want to get it done!!!!!
Happy Weaving!

I Don't Want it to End

Do you every have a warp you just hate to see come to an end?  There will never be another one like this hand dyed bamboo warp, and I've enjoyed it.  So much so that I put off finishing it for a few weeks.  I finally decided to end it with black bamboo for the weft, and finished it this morning.  I still need to hem stitch the end, but got interested in other things this afternoon.  It's only 25 inches long, and I'm not sure what to do with it, but I know that this piece is for me, however I use it.

I really love Weave Design software, and couldn't resist showing you how it drew up this pattern.  It's a lot of fun to play with, but even better to work with.  I wish it had "Undo," but I can overlook that most of the time.  If you don't have it yet, you should get it.  It's free, but please donate something to the lovely people who make it free for us to use.

What got me sidetracked, you may ask, and tore me away from my hem stitching?  I just couldn't take the tapestry loom being in the dining room one more second!  I've always hated it there, especially when I have people over for dinner.  So, last week, I moved some stuff around and made a new sewing room in the back bedroom, which made me move some stuff out of the loominaria.  Not quite enough to make actual space for the loom, but in it went!  Getting it around the piano and through the doorway was a bit tricky, but in it went!  It's very cozy in the loominaria now, but I can still fit a cat in there!  And I'm pretty sure Leo was on the shelves, and I know Bella was right behind me when I took this photo.  Weftie keeps the yarn warm until I start a new tapestry.
Yesterday was delightful enough to do some actual gardening, but today is chilly and getting chillier, and blustery.  The power has even flickered a few times.  So, I'll be snug in my house, starting a new tapestry, finishing the gold and purple warp., and planning my next project, some Rep Weave placemats.
Meanwhile, I leave you with a sweet thought:  Gluten Free Trail Mix Cookies.  Mmmmmmmm...
Happy weaving!

A Quiet Work Day

It was a day of little tasks:  getting those heddles on the bar.

Starting a new rug.....oh, no!  Those ends had to be connected!

Winding the weft onto the rag shuttle.

Winding more yarn balls for the Straw Loom Kits.   (It was good having you with us today, Sharen!)

We have new warps being threaded, wound on and woven.  Sharon is winding a new warp for her next project.

Ann is adding color to that beautiful rug on the Rocker Loom.

Betsy got the reed sleyed, and she'll be ready to tie on and start weaving.

Molly and Jocelyn are working on new projects, too.

Linda is working on another blue jean rug while Tina is attempting to untangle thread coming off the sectional beam.  (We are over half way getting that straightened up and threaded!!!!)

Marie is tackling the shelves in the little hallway.  They tend to be a catch-all for objects that we don't know what to do with!!!!!   (Thank you, Marie!!!!)

A BIG ole THANK YOU to Ms. Ila!  She baked this wonderful chocolate cake for us to share today.  Guess the secret ingredient......Coca Cola!!!!!

What a wonderful March Tuesday!!!!
Happy Weaving!

Rugs...done!

So, Friday was an awesome day for the Tuesday Weavers. How often do we get to meet some of the bloggers we've been following? A month or so ago we had Laura Fry come on a Tuesday. This time those of us that could came Friday to meet Hillary. We all just sat around and talked for a long time. There she is in front of our looms! Plus, I got a picture of LouAnn, even if it is just the back of her head. Usually, she is the one taking pictures! I wish everyone could have been there. It was good.. The picture I  downloaded disappeared so look for it at the bottom of the page!
So what have I been doing this week? I finished the last looper rugs. Done! I got 6 of them done. I decided to just mix up all the colors so they were a hodge lodge of color. I did have more pink, green and purple so those colors kind of stand out.
The last one ended up with more green. The bright warp just blends in and all you see is color. These have been fun rugs to make and I'm sure will find good homes.
I had some yards left on the warp so I used some of the denim I'd been cutting. Blue jean rugs. Got 2 of them done before running out of room. Old jeans find new life in rugs. I'll keep cutting them so that when I'm ready to put another warp on, I'll be ready to weave!
The rugs are all inventoried and ready to go to a shop.
Next up will be back to my regular weaving. I think the first color will be chocolate with a bit of glitz accent...
The last few days have been beautiful. By tomorrow the high will be in the 70s! Sandal weather. By Thursday it will be cold again but for now, it's kind of any excuse to go outside for awhile. Maybe I'll pull out a chair and my copy of Barbara Miller's new book. It's an amazing book. It's official title is Frances L. Goodrich's Brown Book of Weaving Drafts. It's just out and promises to be a treasure trove of information for those of us interested in old drafts, coverlets and history. I am really looking forward to reading it especially since I've known Barbara for many years. She is an awesome weaver and instructor. I love to see new books on weaving being published. No telling how many coverlets will be woven as a result of this little book being made available to so many people that weave! I'm impressed!
So til next week,
Weave on!
